About Us

Timberland Excavating is a Missoula based contracting firm founded in 2017 by forestry & civil construction experts who saw a need for more contractors specializing in environmental damage remediation, public land infrastructure improvement, and private land management.

Specializing in river and forest restoration, we have worked across Montana and the Northern Rockies to restore ecological & practical function to hundreds of unique landscapes shaped by agriculture, timber harvest, mineral extraction, infrastructure development, and other land use pressures. Founded on the idea that effective land stewardship requires practical, well-executed construction, Timberland was built to serve as a comprehensive partner for public land managers and large private landowners alike. Our work spans both water and forest systems, reflecting the reality that forests, roads, drainage, streams, and watersheds are deeply interconnected. From river and wetland restoration to forest road construction, bridge installation, culvert replacement, and drainage improvements, we apply construction as a tool to remediate legacy impacts and support long-term resource resilience.

Jake Watts

Jake is practically a preordained contractor. Growing up in a family that operated an excavation firm, he saw firsthand the power of a family business – quite literally shaping the local landscape, providing jobs, and standing as a bulwark of the American experience. Continuing that heritage, he founded Timberland Excavating to do all of those things and more. A proud small business supporting the Montana economy and improving our land & water.

Jeff Cahill

Jeff entered the workforce at age 16 knowing he wanted to build things, help people, and leave something behind to provide future benefit far past his lifetime. A lifelong outdoorsman, environmental restoration proved the perfect industry. Whether the project is remediating historically degraded
ecosystems, or building new roads to connect people to the land around them, Jeff lives his calling on every job site.

Evan Cass

Evan’s path to the construction industry started in agriculture, environmental science, and community organizations. That background gave him a strong appreciation for working landscapes and the people who depend on them. At Timberland, Evan is a versatile member of the crew who understands the goals of landowners, agencies, engineers, and operators alike. His approach and skill set make him a valuable part of our team.
